When Does Final Fantasy Resonance Release?

Final Fantasy Resonance launches on October 22, 2026 on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Pre-orders are already open, with Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Collector's Editions available — the Collector's Edition includes an artbook, the official soundtrack, and a promotional Final Fantasy Trading Card Game card.

One regional detail is worth knowing before launch day: the Japanese release calendar lists October 23 for Steam, while the international Steam page and most communication show October 22. Storefronts also unlock games at different local times around the world, so treat your platform's own store page as the source of truth for your exact unlock time.

What Is Final Fantasy Resonance?

Final Fantasy Resonance is the first Final Fantasy built in HD-2D — the visual style that pairs detailed pixel art with modern depth, lighting, and dynamic camera work. Square Enix announced the game on June 10, 2026, during a Nintendo Direct, and developed it with LANCARSE as a full-fledged console RPG: a celebration of classic and modern Final Fantasy, not a mobile port.

The premise is a classic tale of Crystals: a mysterious warrior driven by revenge seeks to shatter the eight crystals that sustain the world, and as a knight of the realm you set out to protect them. Around that story, the game gathers many of the series' most recognizable touchstones — chocobos, espers, airships, and moogles — alongside appearances from historic Final Fantasy characters such as Cloud, Tidus, and the Warrior of Light.

From Brave Exvius to Resonance

The game draws its world and cast directly from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the mobile RPG Square Enix has since shut down. Rain, Lasswell, Fina, Grandshelt, and Veritas of the Dark all return, and the story follows the first arc of the mobile game.

This is not a direct port. Square Enix describes Resonance as a console-quality RPG rebuilt from that foundation, with new story content alongside the original material. For longtime Brave Exvius players, it is a second life for a world they spent years in; for newcomers, it is a self-contained console RPG built on that same world.

Gameplay: Classic Final Fantasy, Reimagined

Resonance uses a strategic turn-based battle system built on a traditional turn order rather than the series' classic ATB. The loop documented by Square Enix so far: exploit enemy weaknesses to stagger them, break their defenses to seize extra turns, and finish with powerful Resonance attacks in cinematic battles.

Party building leans on Visions — echoes of beloved Final Fantasy characters who fight alongside your team with their own skills and abilities, deepening customization alongside the classic esper system. Square Enix has also confirmed substantial side content: a wandering Gilgamesh, a Colosseum with deadly monsters, the Chamber of Arms, and a showdown with Ultima Weapon.

Can You Play a Free Demo?

Yes. A free demo covering the first chapter has been available since early September 2026, and your save data transfers to the full game when it launches. It is the easiest way to judge the HD-2D presentation and the turn-based combat for yourself before October 22.

The Music Behind Final Fantasy Resonance

The official soundtrack gathers 120 tracks across four CDs: 33 new compositions by Elements Garden — the team of Noriyasu Agematsu, Seima Kondo, Ryota Tomaru, Junpei Fujita, and Hitoshi Fujima — alongside music from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, whose world the game inherits. The album releases in Japan on October 28, 2026.
